Continuing Major Earthquake Risk in Greek Islands: New Statement for Santorini

The President of the Greek Earthquake Protection Agency stated that there is an ongoing risk of a larger earthquake in the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea. President Lekkas mentioned that the seismic activity between Santorini and Yamurgi islands will persist, indicating a continued risk of a more significant earthquake. Speaking to journalists in the capital Athens, Lekkas emphasized that this process could last weeks or even months. He pointed out that Santorini Island has experienced unplanned growth in the last 30 years, leading to significant unauthorized construction. Lekkas highlighted the substantial risk posed by this situation, explaining that Santorini Island’s formation was a result of natural processes such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, and erosion, but human intervention is now exacerbating these natural processes into disasters.
