Controversial bill from Hungary: Dual citizens to be stripped of citizenship

The ruling Fidesz Party in Hungary has introduced a bill to parliament that proposes dual citizens originating from third countries be stripped of citizenship for a period of 10 years if they pose a threat to national security. This bill has sparked debates in terms of international law. The new bill presented to parliament by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party, Fidesz, outlines that individuals who act in line with the interests of foreign powers and entities, thereby threatening societal order and national security, will have their Hungarian citizenship revoked for a period of 10 years. Consequently, dual citizens from third countries, excluding those from the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland, could be stripped of citizenship on the grounds of posing a threat to societal order and national security. Reports in the Hungarian media highlight that temporarily revoking citizenship does not align with international practices, where citizenship is either permanently revoked or individuals must renounce their dual citizenship rights.
