Criticism of Athens from the Rum Press: “Greece fears Turkey underwater”

Reports from the Greek Cypriot Rum Administration newspapers indicated that Greece is apprehensive of Turkey in relation to the underwater cable connection project spanning from the island of Crete to the Greek Cypriot Rum Administration (GCRA) and then to Israel.

The Rum press published a critical news report regarding Greece’s fear of Turkey.

According to the news, it was stated that Greece is wary of Turkey in relation to the underwater cable electricity connection project (Great Sea Interconnector – GSI) that will stretch from the island of Crete to the Greek Cypriot Rum Administration (GCRA) and then to Israel. The Alithia newspaper based in GCRA used the headline “A Scottish Shower on the Cable. Uncertainty looms again in the project’s continuation after Turkey’s warning.”

The news revealed that the request for the resumption of work on the GSI project after it was halted by ADMIE due to geopolitical risks had not been approved by the Greek Foreign Ministry until yesterday. One of the harshest criticisms in Athens regarding the project involving an underwater cable for electricity from Crete to GCRA and then to Israel came from Alphanews.

“WARNING OF TENSION WITH ANKARA” Alphanews, using the phrase “Athens is apprehensive of Turkey” in their report, informed their readers that the Greek Foreign Ministry had been unable to issue a NAVTEX on the matter for days. While the Fileleftheros newspaper warned on its front page of the tensions that would arise with Ankara regarding the GSI project, highlighting the impact of Ankara’s warnings on Greece, most newspapers and TV channels in GCRA attributed the inability to implement the project to Greece’s apprehension of Turkey. Politis newspaper, in an article titled “Testing U.S. Intentions Regarding GSI,” reported that after the temporary halt in payments for the installation of an underwater electricity cable between South Cyprus and Crete, South Cyprus, Greece, and Israel involved in the project were attempting to clarify the stance of the United States on the project.
