Cyber Attack on Major Company: Data of Tens of Thousands of Customers Stolen

NTT Communications, one of Japan’s leading telecommunications companies, announced that approximately 18,000 corporate customers had their data compromised following a cyber attack that took place in February 2025.
The company revealed that the attack was carried out through an internal system known as the “Service Order Information Distribution System,” which is used to manage service activations and modifications.
ACCESS TO SYSTEM RESTRICTED NTT Communications detected the attack on February 5, 2025, and immediately restricted system access to take initial measures. However, further examinations on February 15 revealed that a second device in the company’s internal network had also been compromised by the attackers. This device was promptly removed from the network. The company has not shared any information about the group behind the attack or the exact nature of the breach. MOBILE CONTRACTS UNAFFECTED The compromised data included customer names, contract numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and service usage details. However, it was clarified that individual consumer data or NTT Docomo’s corporate mobile contracts were not impacted by this attack. The company stated that there is no evidence of the stolen data being misused. OPERATES IN OVER 70 COUNTRIES NTT Communications has a broad service network worldwide. With physical locations in more than seventy countries, the company is a significant player in the information and communication technology sector, offering global cloud services, data centers, VPN services, and security solutions. ADDITIONAL MEASURES TAKEN NTT Communications announced that it has taken additional measures to enhance its security systems and improve monitoring systems following this incident. It was also mentioned that customers would be informed directly through communication channels and no notifications would be made via email. This is seen as a precaution against potential phishing attacks. CYBER THREATS ON THE RISE This event highlights how the telecommunications sector has become a target for cybercriminals and state-sponsored hacker groups. Telecom companies are not only targeted for customer data but also due to their critical infrastructure services. Following this incident, NTT Communications plans to implement a comprehensive security strategy to regain the trust of its customers.
