Danish postal service to halt letter delivery

Denmark’s postal service announced that it will cease letter delivery by the end of 2025, resulting in the termination of approximately 1,500 employees. Around 1,500 mailboxes in the country will also start to be removed starting from June.
With the increasing use of digital communication tools worldwide, traditional methods like letter writing are becoming obsolete.
The state-operated postal service PostNord in Denmark stated that due to a 90% decline, they will stop letter deliveries as of January 1, 2026.
1,500 EMPLOYEES TO LOSE JOBS
As a result of this decision, around 1,500 out of 4,600 employees are expected to lose their jobs.
Following the halt of letter delivery, the removal of around 1,500 mailboxes in the country is expected to commence in June, while a Danish private company announced its willingness to take over the letter distribution.
DECLINING SINCE 2000
In Denmark, where letter distribution has been declining since 2000, the decision is anticipated to affect the elderly population the most.
While 95% of Danes use digital mail services, it was noted that 271,000 individuals still send letters. PostNord also operates in Sweden.
8,000 JOB CUTS IN GERMANY
German postal service Deutsche Post also announced today that due to high costs, they will be laying off around 8,000 employees, most of whom are involved in letter and package delivery, by the end of the year.
