Demand for Comprehensive Fight Against Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

Farmers are calling for a comprehensive fight against the brown marmorated stink bug. The President of the Union of Chambers of Agriculture of Turkey (TZOB), Şemsi Bayraktar, emphasized the need for the battle against this pest to continue without slowing down. “Time is running out, we must accelerate the winter battle during this process,” he said. Şemsi Bayraktar, the President of TZOB, stated that the fight against the brown marmorated stink bug should continue without pause, as this harmful insect is spreading to agricultural areas with the warming weather. “Time is running out, we need to accelerate the battle during this process,” he said. Bayraktar noted that in the regions of the Black Sea and Marmara, more than 300 agricultural products, especially hazelnuts, are damaged by the brown marmorated stink bug, which resides in abandoned buildings, barns, and warehouses, especially during the winter months. Drawing attention to the fact that when the temperature increases, the insect starts to spread from these areas to agricultural fields, Bayraktar emphasized the importance of continuous and comprehensive fight to prevent the spread of the pest. Bayraktar pointed out that public health pesticide applications and mechanical eradication methods are recommended for an effective fight against the brown marmorated stink bug. He further explained that there are some challenges in collective combat, such as the difficulty of controlling the pest wintering outside agricultural areas, some farmers who don’t reside in the region not participating effectively in the battle, recent start of natural enemy insect production and its limited spread, as well as high prices of pesticides used in chemical combat and geographical application difficulties. For these reasons, for preventing major losses in hazelnut production due to the brown marmorated stink bug invasion, it is of great importance for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, municipalities, and all related agricultural institutions to collaborate under the coordination of the governorship and conduct collective chemical combat. Bayraktar stressed that in the framework of the “Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Action Plan” carried out with the Ministry and agricultural chambers, efforts are made to prevent the spread of the infestation through farmer training, trap deployment, natural enemy insect production, and mechanical combat methods, emphasizing that joint action by authorized institutions and stakeholders is crucial to make the fight more effective and comprehensive. He indicated that municipalities and village administrations have a significant responsibility in implementing public health pesticide applications and mechanical eradication methods in homes, abandoned buildings, barns, and warehouses, as this harmful insect spreads to agricultural areas with the warming weather. “Time is running out, we must accelerate the winter battle during this process. In order to protect all our plant products, especially hazelnuts, we must continue the comprehensive fight against the brown marmorated stink bug without slowing down.”
