Democrats win election in Greenland Trump aims to seize

The parliamentary elections in Greenland, where independence discussions are ongoing, were won by the opposition party Demokraatit. US President Trump argues that owning Greenland is an “absolute necessity.”

Demokraatit (Democrats) Party won the parliamentary elections in Greenland, where threats of “seizing” by US President Donald Trump continue. According to CNN International, in the parliamentary elections in Greenland, where independence discussions are ongoing, the opposition party Demokraatit secured a majority in parliament by winning 29.9% of the votes. Naleraq, campaigning for faster independence from Denmark, garnered 24.5% of the votes. The Inuit Ataqatigiit (Community of People) Party led by Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede received approximately 21% of the votes.

REFERENDUM ON THE AGENDA

All parties in Greenland, an autonomous region under Denmark, agree on the island’s independence, but differ on the speed of this process. Calls for independence have been on the island’s agenda for about a decade, and following the general election, organizing a referendum to gain independence from Denmark is also on the agenda.

TRUMP’S TAKEOVER PLAN

President Trump, on December 23, 2024, reiterated his stance that Greenland should be under his country’s control in a post on Truth Social, stating that owning and controlling the island is an “absolute necessity.” Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede rejected the possibility of Greenland becoming a US state, declaring that the country is “not for sale.” Trump, in his speech to the US Congress on March 5, stated, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security. I think we’re going to get it one way or the other. We will get it and keep you safe.” Following this, Egede also said, “We don’t want to be American or Danish, we are Greenlanders. Americans and their leaders need to understand this.”
