Disaster Strikes While Dancing: Nightclub Turns Into a Graveyard

The roof of a popular nightclub in the Dominican Republic collapsed during a live performance. At least 113 people were reported dead in the incident.
The roof of the entertainment venue named “Jet Set” in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, collapsed yesterday while there were at least 300 customers inside. According to Juan Manuel Mendez, the Director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), 113 people died as a result of the collapse.
Rescue operations are ongoing in the rubble, and around 160 injured individuals have been taken to hospitals. A temporary morgue and blood donation center were set up near the venue. Mendez mentioned hearing cries for help, stating that “as long as there is hope for life, all authorities will try to rescue these people.”
It was noted that former Major League Baseball player Octavio Dotel was among the fatalities. It was recorded that artist Rubby Perez and his orchestra were performing on stage during the collapse. A wide hole in the middle of the building was seen in aerial footage taken after sunrise. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader declared a three-day mourning period following the disaster in his statement. Abinader expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy after visiting the entertainment venue for inspection. He stated, “All rescue agencies have provided necessary assistance and are tirelessly working in the rescue operation.” “Jet Set” is considered one of the Dominican Republic’s most famous entertainment venues in terms of attendance on Monday nights.
