Discovery of “Control” in the World of Fortune Telling: Earned 15 Million Lira, Paid Zero Tax

The Ministry of Finance has taken action against those providing services in areas such as fortune telling, astrology, and mediumship. Initial examinations found 1,034 taxpayers at risk, with undeclared revenues amounting to 1.8 billion lira. It was discovered that a person who identified as an astrologer earned 15 million lira but did not pay a single penny in taxes. The Treasury and Ministry of Finance scrutinized those providing services in various areas such as fortune telling, astrology, spiritualism, mediumship, and star charts but not declaring their incomes. The Ministry focused on the increase in individuals offering services in fields such as fortune telling, astrology, spiritualism, mediumship, cupping and leech therapy, star charts, spells, meditation, numerology, talismans, and reiki in recent times. USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR ANALYSIS The Ministry analyzed the business models of fortune telling and astrology consultants, as well as spiritualists, using artificial intelligence to investigate their income sources. Digital traces, websites, social media interactions, online payment systems, and other data were examined to understand these incomes. It was observed that services such as face-to-face sessions, phone and messaging, astrological predictions through WhatsApp and Telegram groups, specialized spiritualist information sharing, personalized birth charts, and tarot reports were provided. It was also found that interactive live broadcasts on YouTube and TikTok, as well as posts on Facebook and Instagram, were used to increase follower numbers. These individuals were found to charge fees per session, earning income by providing services such as cleansing, meditation, and therapy during three-day or one-week holidays through live broadcasts and posts on social media platforms. 1.8 BILLION LIRA IN UNDECLARED REVENUE In this context, individuals providing services in areas such as fortune telling, astrology, spiritualism, mediumship, cupping and leech therapy, star charts, spells, meditation, numerology, talismans, and reiki in the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 were monitored by examining their social media activities and financial data. The incomes of these individuals identified as taxpayers were compared with their disclosed and reported incomes. Taxpayers who earned income through activities in these fields but did not fulfill their tax obligations were identified. According to the initial results of the analysis, 1,034 taxpayers were identified as “at risk”, and approximately 1.8 billion lira in undeclared revenue was detected. It was observed that 295 individuals worked without being taxpayers, and the process of tax registration was initiated for them. EARNED 15 MILLION LIRA, PAID ZERO TAX In the analysis, it was found that an individual working without registration provided astrological predictions, spiritualist information sharing, personalized birth charts, and tarot reports, organized interactive live broadcasts on social media, and earned 15 million lira from these activities. However, it was understood that this person was not a taxpayer and had not submitted any declarations for this income earned. Following these findings, taxpayers have begun to be invited to provide explanations. Taxpayers who do not submit declarations or correct their previous declarations will be subject to tax audits. “REAL EARNINGS SHOULD BE DECLARED” Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek stated that services such as fortune telling and astrology provided by an individual on a personal basis should be taxed as part of freelance professional activities, saying: “Our aim is to ensure justice in taxation, and our fight against undeclared income in all earnings without exception will continue. The work will also be carried out regarding the incomes obtained in 2024. Taxpayers who comply with the invitation to provide explanations will not face severe penalties. Taxpayers should declare their real earnings before the declaration period passes.”
