Doctors Engaging in Tax Evasion: Money Found in Secretary or Ex-Spouse Accounts

The Revenue Administration Agency, scrutinizing doctors, revealed that 15 billion TL of income had been hidden. During the inspections, the hidden funds were discovered in the accounts of secretaries or ex-spouses. Most of the doctors caught by the Treasury preferred to settle.

The Ministry of Treasury and Finance’s audits on tax evasion are ongoing. Significant tax evaders have been identified in efforts to ensure tax justice. Tax Offices and Tax Directorates recently focused their attention on private practice doctors.

The Revenue Administration Agency (RAA), with its data and information from banks, analyzed them with the help of artificial intelligence. According to a report by Hürriyet newspaper, the analysis of RAA data identified 33,000 risky doctor taxpayers. In the second stage, the accounts of close relatives, ex-spouses, and employees of doctors identified as risky were examined for financial activities. In these audits, it was found that 3,500 doctors were risky taxpayers.

In one inspection, activity of 5 million TL was discovered in the bank account of a secretary working for a doctor for minimum wage. In another case, activity was detected in the account of an ex-spouse. Authorities stated that they require an explanation of the source of such funds in these situations. If the source is not disclosed, the money is assumed to belong to the doctor, and the taxpayer is invited to voluntary compliance.

It was reported that the Revenue Administration Agency found a tax base difference of approximately 15 billion TL in its audits on doctors. It was noted that discussions were held with identified doctors, and nearly half of them voluntarily complied.

It was mentioned that taxpayers who voluntarily comply submit a declaration for the revenue they have gained. It was emphasized that tax penalities are not applied to taxpayers who voluntarily comply.
