Dual income recipients wonder: Will those who retired after 2008 be able to work? Will the era of receiving both a salary and retirement pension end?

Changes are being considered in the work arrangement of those who retired after 2008. In the current system, retirees were able to continue working while receiving their pension with certain deductions. However, with new regulations, it is being discussed that this situation may change, making it more difficult to both receive a retirement pension and work. So, will those who retired after 2008 be able to work? Will the era of receiving both a salary and retirement pension end? New regulations concerning retirement, especially for those who retired after October 1, 2008, are of great interest. The potential significant changes for retirees who continue to work have caught the attention of millions. While it remains a mystery whether the Social Security Institution (SGK) has made a new regulation on this matter, the roadmap for retirees receiving dual incomes is a major question mark. In Turkey, many citizens continue to work after retiring. Providing answers to the questions at hand, TOBB ETU Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Cem Kılıç stated, “When someone retires, they will not have the opportunity, like EYT (Retirement of Work Years) followers, to receive both a salary and a pension. In fact, this has been in place since October 1, 2008. There is a provision in Law No. 5510, so this is not something new.” October 1, 2008 marks the date when the Social Security Reform, which brought about significant changes to Turkey’s social security system, came into effect. With this reform, the Social Security Institution (SGK) unified SSK, Bağ-Kur, and Retirement Fund under one roof, while retirement conditions and insurance premiums were restructured. With Law No. 5510 on Social Insurance and General Health Insurance coming into effect on October 1, 2008, the retirement age was gradually increased, and the number of days for premium payments for employees (SSK) was set at 7200 and for tradesmen and farmers (Bağ-Kur) at 9000.
