Economic confidence index in Euro Area declined in March

Confidence in the economy weakened in Europe in March. According to the report by the EU Commission, the economic confidence index decreased by 1.1 points to 95.2 on a monthly basis. The EU Commission released the results of the March business and consumer surveys. As a result, the economic confidence index in the EU fell by 0.9 points to 96 in March. In the Euro Area, the index also decreased by 1.1 points to 95.2 during the same period. Market expectations were for the index to be at 97 in the Euro Area. The released data falling below expectations was noteworthy. The Euro Area Consumer Confidence Index also declined from -13.6 in March to -14.5. This indicated a weakening in consumers’ overall expectations about the economic situation in the Euro Area. In the EU, the index decreased by 1 point in March, measuring -13.9.
