Election Results Decided in Greenland Amid Trump’s Threats of “Acquisition”

The independence-oriented Democrats Party won the parliamentary elections in Greenland while US President Donald Trump’s statements threatening to take control of the island continue. A referendum on independence may be on the agenda following the election.
In Greenland, where President Donald Trump’s threats to “take control” persist, the Democrats Party won the parliamentary elections. According to CNN, the elections where voters went to the polls to determine the parliament were completed. In the parliamentary elections in Greenland where independence discussions continue, the opposition party Democrats secured the majority by receiving 29.9% of the votes. Naleraq, campaigning for a faster independence from Denmark, received 24.5% of the votes. The Inuit Ataqatigiit (Community of the People) Party led by Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede received about 21% of the votes. Although all parties in Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, agree on the island’s independence, they have different views on the speed of this process. Calls for independence have been on Greenland’s agenda for about a decade, with a referendum being discussed to achieve independence from Denmark after the general election. TRUMP’S PLAN TO “ACQUIRE CONTROL” OF GREENLAND
On December 23, 2024, US President Trump reiterated his stance that Greenland should be under his country’s control, stating on his Truth Social account that it is an “absolute necessity” to have the ownership and control of the island. Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede, however, rejected the possibility of Greenland becoming a US state, stating that the country is “not for sale.” Trump had used the words “We need Greenland for national security, and even international security. I think somehow we’re going to get that done. We’re getting it for whatever reason and we’ll keep you safe.” during a speech in the US Congress on March 5. Following this, Egede said, “We don’t want to be Americans or Danes, we are Greenlanders. Americans and their leaders need to understand this.”
