Elephants Formed a “Warning Circle” During the Earthquake

Video footage captured a herd of elephants at San Diego Zoo Safari Park encircling each other for safety during the earthquake that occurred at the park. The behavior displayed by the elephants during the 5.2-magnitude earthquake that hit Southern California this morning drew attention. Named Ndlula, Zuli, Mkhaya, Umngani, and Khosi, the elephants formed a well-known ‘warning circle’ to protect their herd as they felt the effects of the earthquake. This behavior of the elephants serves as an example of an ancient defense mechanism they implement to defend each other when they quickly gather in response to perceiving threats in their surroundings.
