Embryos Mixed Up, Woman Gives Birth to Another Woman’s Baby

In Australia, it has been revealed that a woman at a fertility center was mistakenly implanted with an embryo that was not her own. The facility has apologized for the mix-up. According to The Guardian, the incident took place at a fertility center in Queensland. The nationwide Monash IVF center expressed regret over the event where a woman unknowingly gave birth to another woman’s baby at one of their clinics in Brisbane due to the accidental transfer of a different embryo. The error was discovered in February after the parents requested the remaining embryos to be transferred to another fertility provider. The center then realized that there weren’t enough embryos expected for the parents, revealing an extra belonging to the couple. Monash IVF confirmed that a thorough investigation determined that another couple’s embryo was mistakenly transferred after being “dissolved.” They attributed the situation to “human error,” informing the couple of the mistake within the following week. Michael Knaap, the top executive at Monash IVF, apologized for the confusion and assured continued support for the affected parents. He expressed that they were devastated by the incident, apologized to everyone involved, and maintained that additional checks were conducted to ensure it was an “isolated incident.” The facility also reported the incident to the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee responsible for fertility technologies in Queensland. Additionally, the fertility center had settled a $56 million compensation deal with over 700 former patients in August following allegations of incorrectly destroying embryos during genetic testing. While stating the agreement was reached through mediation, the responsibility for the incident was not admitted.
