Energy Facilities Hit in Major Russian Attack on Ukraine, Oil and Gas Leaks Reported

Throughout the night, Russia and Ukraine carried out long-range attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. In a major Russian bombardment, one of the facilities of Ukraine’s national gas company Naftogaz in the Poltava region was damaged. Reports indicated oil and natural gas leaks in the area overnight. Following the attack, it was announced that nine settlements were left without gas.
The Ukrainian General Staff announced that their forces had struck a oil refinery in Russia’s Saratov region, causing a fire. It was stated that attacks on strategic targets involved in Russia’s armed attack on Ukraine would continue.
The Russian Defense Ministry also announced that Ukrainian gas and energy facilities supporting the Kiev army were hit in overnight air raids. State-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz and Energy Minister German Galushchenko stated on Tuesday that oil and natural gas leaks occurred overnight in the central Poltava region of Ukraine.
The statement said, “Production facilities of Naftogaz Group in the Poltava region were damaged. Fortunately, there were no casualties.”
The regional military administration of Poltava in the Myrhorod region announced that nine settlements were left without gas.
Naftogaz stated, “All necessary measures are being taken to stabilize the gas supply situation in the Poltava region.”
Ukraine’s national gas company Naftogaz confirmed that one of its facilities in the eastern Poltava region was damaged in a “major” Russian attack that took place overnight.
Following the attack, temporary power outages were frequently enforced across Ukraine this morning.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had initiated a unified attack using 19 cruise, ballistic, and guided missiles against gas production facilities in the Poltava region. It was noted that none of the missiles were intercepted.
Russia, which had previously focused missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s electricity sector, has sharply increased its attacks on Ukraine’s gas storage facilities and production fields in recent months.
While Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities are located in the west, the main production capacity is in the east, with the front line in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions.
