EU ready for powerful retaliation against US tariffs

President of the EU Commission, von der Leyen, stated that they are prepared to retaliate strongly against US tariffs. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, discussed trade relations with the US and new tariffs during a plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg. Von der Leyen emphasized that Europe did not initiate the customs tax dispute, saying, “We believe that tariffs are incorrect. Today, my message to you is that we have everything we need to protect our people and our welfare.” She underscored that the EU possesses the world’s largest single market, is capable of negotiating tariffs, and has the strength to resist them, stating, “We will always defend our interests and values.” Recalling that the US administration has announced a 25% import duty on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and car parts, von der Leyen noted that the next sectors to face customs taxes will be semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and timber. She indicated that the US will announce “reciprocal tariffs” on nearly all goods and many countries worldwide tomorrow, highlighting that there are many problems and imbalances in the trade world, but they must be combated together. von der Leyen stressed the potential inflationary effect of tariffs, stating, “Tariffs are taxes paid by the public. Tariffs will only fuel inflation.” She mentioned that negotiation is the first element of the EU’s strategy against tariffs, expressing the desire to address these issues. Stating, “We are ready to take countermeasures,” von der Leyen pointed out that all options are on the table. von der Leyen highlighted that she is in close contact with the leaders of EU member states regarding the next steps related to tariffs, and added, “We will carefully evaluate the US’s announcements tomorrow and adjust our response. Our goal is to find a solution through negotiation. We will protect our interests, our people, and our companies if necessary. I want to be very clear about the purpose of our response. We believe this confrontation is not in anyone’s interest.” Recalling that a constructive solution is beneficial for everyone, von der Leyen asserted, “Europe did not start this conflict. We do not necessarily want to retaliate. However, we have a strong plan in place for retaliation if needed, and we will implement it.” She concluded by stating that they will continue to diversify trade with other partners and deepen the single market.
