European Union Prepares Measures Against US Tariffs

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that they have prepared additional measures in response to the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States. von der Leyen, who warned of an increase in inflation, called for negotiations with the US. Speaking in Samarkand, where she was attending the EU-Central Asia Summit following the announcement of reciprocal tariffs by the US President Donald Trump, von der Leyen stated that the tariffs declared by Trump against all countries, including the EU, were a major blow to the world economy. She emphasized her deep regret over this, saying that reciprocal tariffs will have enormous consequences, stating, “The global economy will suffer greatly, uncertainty will increase, and protectionism will rise. The consequences will be terrible for millions of people worldwide.” warning of an increase in inflation, von der Leyen pointed out that the impact of the tariffs will be felt immediately and will harm consumers worldwide. She stated that millions of citizens will face higher grocery bills, and that medicines and transportation will become more costly due to the tariffs. von der Leyen also expressed that uncertainties would increase, supply chains would be disrupted, and there would be costly bureaucracy, highlighting that the cost of doing business with the US would increase significantly. von der Leyen indicated that there is no longer an order in the global trade system, and stated that the US has thrown its trading partners into chaos and confusion. She acknowledged to agree with US President Trump on the serious deficiencies in the global trade system, and that some have unfairly benefited from it. Reasserting readiness to support any effort to make the global trade system more in line with the realities of the economy, von der Leyen emphasized, “However, I want to make one thing clear. Turning to tariffs as your first and last resort will not solve the problem.” She reminded that they are always ready to negotiate with the US to remove barriers in transatlantic trade, and stated, “Moreover, we are ready to respond. We are already completing our first retaliatory package in response to the tariffs on steel. Now, if the negotiations fail, we are preparing to take further countermeasures to protect our interests and businesses.” von der Leyen pointed out that they will closely monitor the indirect effects of the new tariffs, saying, “We will not accept global overcapacity and dumping in our market.” von der Leyen reaffirmed that they will defend the interests and values of Europe, and explained that issues can be resolved through negotiations. She stressed that Europe has everything it needs to weather the inevitable effects of US tariffs. President Trump announced that the US will apply reciprocal tariffs to other countries starting tomorrow, with the basic tariff rate of 10 percent. Accordingly, reciprocal tariffs of 34 percent to China, 20 percent to the EU, 46 percent to Vietnam, 32 percent to Taiwan, 24 percent to Japan, and 26 percent to India are expected to be imposed.
