Expecting 130 Billion Lira Card Shopping in Retail Sector

The retail sector is expecting 130 billion lira in card shopping during the Eid al-Fitr. Sinan Öncel, President of the United Brands Association (BMD), stated that they anticipate 130 billion lira worth of card transactions during Eid al-Fitr, starting from the eve of the holiday. In a written statement, Öncel mentioned that shopping in the branded retail sector would intensify on the eve of March 29, focusing on expenses that partially provide relief in categories such as groceries, clothing, shoes, and meals. Öncel noted that around 20% of card spending is for grocery expenses, with clothing, shoes, and food and drink being the other top three categories. Observing from previous years, we know that shopping before religious holidays tends to concentrate on the eve. The data from the Interbank Card Center (BKM) confirms our observations. For example, last year’s total card spending of 94.1 billion lira during the 4-day Eid al-Fitr holiday showed that 37 billion lira, or 39%, took place on the eve of the holiday. This year, we predict that card spending during the 4-day holiday will reach 130 billion lira, with an increase of around 40% parallel to the annual inflation rate. We expect approximately 40%, or 50 billion lira, of this shopping to occur on March 29.” Sinan Öncel also stated that sales in branded retail decreased in the first two months of the year, mentioning that there are seasonal increases during religious holidays and special occasions. He emphasized that the only solution to reverse this trend is by creating innovative products and reducing costs.
