Expert Reveals: Nature Videos Can Ease Pain

A recent study conducted by academics from the University of Exeter and the University of Vienna has revealed that watching nature documentaries and natural landscapes can have a pain-relieving effect. Brain scans of 49 participants in the study showed that individuals watching nature videos experienced less pain compared to those watching city or office scenes. By administering mild electric shocks to participants, the impact of nature on pain was tested. The results indicated that the decrease in pain experienced by those watching nature scenes was approximately half as effective as standard painkillers.

Max Steininger, a doctoral student from the University of Vienna and the lead author of the study, mentioned that previous research had shown that people feel less pain when exposed to nature, but the reasons were unclear until now. He stated, “Our study shows that nature changes the way the brain processes pain. It’s not just a placebo effect; nature reduces the brain’s response to where the pain comes from and its intensity.” Steininger emphasized that individuals suffering from pain should continue taking their prescribed medications, but alternative pain management methods like interacting with nature could potentially contribute to treatment in the future.

Dr. Alex Smalley, a co-author of the study from the University of Exeter, noted, “This study indicates that exposure to nature in a virtual environment has healing effects. It also highlights the importance of preserving natural settings and encourages society to spend more time in nature.”
