Far-right AfD Takes First Place in Polls for the First Time in Germany

A recent poll in Germany revealed that the far-right AfD, which came in second in the last election, surpassed the election winner CDU/CSU in terms of voter support. For the first time, AfD claimed the top position in a poll. Following the early general election on February 23 in Germany, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which suffered its biggest election defeat in history, are expected to announce an agreement on the coalition government today. However, a survey highlighted the ongoing decline in the voter support for CDU/CSU. According to the Ipsos Institute’s poll, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which finished second in the election, increased their voter support by 3 points, reaching 25%. Reuters news agency pointed out that CDU/CSU’s voter support was at 24%, making AfD’s rise to first place in the poll a significant development. In the election, CDU/CSU received a total of 28.6% of the votes, while AfD secured the second position with 20.8%. However, due to the historical tendency in Germany to exclude far-right parties from coalition discussions following World War II, AfD was not invited to the negotiations. The Ipsos poll revealed that the conservative bloc consisting of CDU and CSU, led by Friedrich Merz, who is highly likely to become the new chancellor, lost 5 points, receiving 24% of the votes, thus coming in second after AfD. The survey also showed that the current Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD maintained its voter support at 15%. AfD Co-Chair and federal chancellor candidate Alice Weidel shared her thoughts on the recent poll results, stating that “people desire political change, not the ‘business as usual’ coalition between CDU/CSU and SPD.” According to Bild newspaper’s Sunday Insa poll, while CDU/CSU received a total of 28.6% of the votes in the election, their voter support dropped to 24%, aligning with AfD, which also had 24% of the votes. The fact that the voter support of the two parties was equal was considered a first in Germany.
