Foreign Minister Fidan: We Don’t Want to Confront Israel in Syria

Foreign Minister Fidan, in an interview with Reuters news agency, mentioned that Turkey does not wish to engage in a conflict with Israel in Syria. Minister Hakan Fidan spoke to Reuters, emphasizing Turkey’s stance on avoiding clashes with Israel in Syria. He highlighted how Israeli attacks weakened Syria’s new government’s capability to deter threats like the terrorist group ISIS. Fidan expressed concerns that Israel’s actions in Syria could lead to regional instability in the future, stating that any agreements between Syria and Israel are solely their own business. Moreover, Fidan mentioned Turkey’s interest in forming a regional anti-ISIS alliance with Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. When asked about the tensions between the US and Iran, Fidan emphasized the importance of diplomacy and Turkey’s desire not to witness any attacks on Iran. He also mentioned that President Donald Trump’s policy changes could present an opportunity for Europe, which has been heavily reliant on the US since the Cold War. Fidan also addressed the situation regarding Russia-Ukraine conflict and sanctions, acknowledging that reaching a peace agreement between the two countries might be challenging but necessary to prevent further bloodshed. He commented on the sanctions imposed on Turkey by the US due to Russian missiles, calling it an anomaly that needs to be rectified to maintain deterrence and prevent any resumption of hostilities. Additionally, Fidan expressed hope that Trump’s problem-solving techniques and the new administration might find a solution to lift the US sanctions on Turkey’s defense industry following the S-400 defense system purchase from Russia in 2019.
