Former Peruvian President Ends Hunger Strike in Hospital

Peru’s former president Pedro Castillo, who has been on a hunger strike in prison since December 2022, was taken to the hospital. Due to deteriorating health, former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who began a hunger strike in prison, was transferred to a hospital in the Vitarte district by ambulance. Officials announced that Castillo was referred to the hospital due to suspicion of fluid-electrolyte imbalance and mild dehydration. Judge Norma Carbajal stated that the 55-year-old Castillo is not in a life-threatening condition and said, “He was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. His condition is stable.” Meanwhile, according to local media, Castillo’s visitor rights have been suspended for violating prison rules due to the hunger strike. Castillo’s former lawyer, Walter Ayala, revealed that Castillo has appealed to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to have his rights restored. Castillo had announced that he started a hunger strike in prison on March 10 to protest the court during the trial for “disturbing public order.” Denying the charges against him, Castillo had stated, “I have been unjustly imprisoned for crimes I never committed. Today, due to the injustices against me, I have decided to start a hunger strike.” Former President Castillo, who was impeached by Congress on December 7, 2022, was sentenced to 18 months of preventive detention on December 14, 2022. Castillo, who has been on trial in Peru since December 2022 for leading a criminal organization and committing public crimes, had his preventive detention extended by 14 months to June 11, 2024.
