France Demands Its Gift Back: “Return the Statue of Liberty”

A French politician, a supporter of Ukraine, criticized the U.S. for its war-related actions and demanded the return of the Statue of Liberty. The statue, located in New York, is seen as a symbol of freedom and the United States.

Raphael Glucksmann, a French politician known for advocating for Ukraine, criticized the U.S.’s changing stance on values during his party’s congress. According to AFP, Glucksmann stated, “Give us back the Statue of Liberty. To Americans who choose to stand with tyrants, to Americans who dismiss scientists demanding freedom, we will say this: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty.'”

“GIFTED TO YOU, NOW YOU DESPISE IT” Throughout his speech, the passionate French politician expressed anger, adding, “We gifted it to you, but apparently you despise it. So, it seems fine here at home.” In 1884, France presented the Statue of Liberty as a gift to the U.S. to commemorate the alliance between the two countries. The statue was dismantled and transported with the French Navy ship Isère. The entire structure was completed in 1886. Since then, the statue in New York has become a symbol of freedom and the United States.

“WE WILL GLADLY ACCEPT THE ONES YOU WANT TO EXPEL” In a statement on Sunday, Glucksmann stated, “The second thing we will say to Americans is this: ‘If you want to expel your best researchers, if you want to expel all those who have made your country a leading power in the world through their commitment to freedom, innovation, skepticism, and curiosity, then we will gladly accept them.'”

U.S. POLICY ON THE UKRAINE WAR Europe accuses President Donald Trump of siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine during ceasefire talks. The tension between countries escalated greatly after Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a heated argument in front of journalists at the Oval Office on February 28. As a result of the argument, the U.S. temporarily withdrew military aid and intelligence support from Ukraine. Russia has long been seen as an enemy of the U.S. by Republicans and Democrats, while Ukraine is considered an ally. America’s European allies are expressing concerns about Trump’s approach towards Ukraine and Russia.
