The hazelnut was also affected by the catastrophic frost. An estimated loss of between 25 to 30 percent in yield is indicated. This situation is expected to result in an increase in hazelnut prices.

One of the most affected products by the catastrophic frost that hit 36 provinces is hazelnut. Hamza Bölük, the President of the Giresun Commodity Exchange, stated, “The snowfall in April and the subsequent frost caused serious damage. This needs to be determined. However, looking at today, it is possible to say that approximately 15-20 percent of hazelnuts have been lost.” Bölük said that the hazelnut yield, which is about 800 thousand tons, decreased to 600 thousand tons due to the frost.

INCREASE IN HAZELNUT PRICES EXPECTED Bölük, pointing out that the yield loss will have a negative impact on hazelnut prices, said, “This will have a consequence for the consumers. Due to the scarcity of the product, an increase in price is expected. We saw an increase of up to 20% in prices within two days. It is possible that this increase will continue. Consumers will also consume hazelnuts at a higher price.” Bölük emphasized the importance of TARSİM insurance for producers to not be affected by such situations. Calling for support from authorities, Bölük stated, “If there are orchards that need to be determined and renewed, support for renewal is necessary, otherwise, orchards need more support in terms of fertilizers and pesticides. Fertilizing, spraying, and preventing mineral losses in the soil are essential.”
