Global Trade War: EU Heads to US for Discussions

Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission’s Member Responsible for Trade, will be heading to Washington on Monday for discussions on tariffs. Olof Gill, the spokesperson for the European Commission, provided comments on discussions regarding US tariffs at the daily press briefing held in Brussels. Gill stated that Sefcovic, the official responsible for trade matters and negotiations at the Commission, will be having meetings with US officials in Washington on Monday, emphasizing that the EU is willing to make mutually beneficial agreements with the US. Gill highlighted the necessity to avoid any tensions that could harm both sides of the Atlantic and the global economy, stating that Sefcovic’s trip to Washington is aimed at finding solutions that benefit everyone with goodwill. It is expected that Sefcovic will meet with top US officials such as US Secretary of Trade Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The EU side hopes to sit down at the negotiation table with the US and reach an agreement on tariffs. Yesterday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed the desire to give negotiations a chance following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of suspending additional tariffs on trade partners other than China for 90 days, stating, “While we complete the acceptance of EU countermeasures, seen with strong support from our member states, we will suspend them for 90 days.”
