Google’s Racism Lawsuit: Company to Pay $28 Million

In a lawsuit accusing Google of racism, the company has agreed to pay $28 million. The case alleged that Google paid white and Asian employees better wages and provided more career opportunities compared to employees of other ethnicities. According to BBC, a former Google employee, Ana Cantu, accused the company of favoring white and Asian employees, paying lower salaries to employees of other backgrounds, and not providing equal career opportunities. The lawsuit, filed in 2021, has now been settled. Cantu, of Mexican descent, stated that despite working hard at Google for 7 years, she did not receive promotions like her white and Asian colleagues. Google agreed to pay $28 million in the lawsuit filed on behalf of 6,632 employees employed between February 15, 2018 and December 31, 2024. Judge Charles Adams of the California Santa Clara Superior Court gave preliminary approval to the settlement reached between the parties. A Google spokesperson announced that while they reached a settlement, they continue to deny the allegations of discriminating against employees. The spokesperson stated, “We have reached a settlement but we will continue to disagree with the claims that we treated anyone differently and will remain committed to fair payment, hiring, and compensation practices for all employees.”
