Greece’s new president determined after the 4th round

After the 4th round of voting in the Greek Parliament, the new president was chosen as Konstantinos Tasulas. The Greek Parliament held its fourth vote to determine the successor to President Katerina Sakelaropulu, whose term will end in March. In the 300-seat parliament, 276 members participated in the election, where candidates from the ruling New Democracy party, main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), and Victory Party competed. Tasulas came first with 160 votes, while Yanichis received 34, Katseli 29, and Kiryaku 14 votes. The number of abstentions was 39. Tasulas, surpassing the required number of votes for the fourth round, which was 151, earned the title of Greece’s new president. Following Sakelaropulu’s term ending, Tasulas will be sworn in on March 13 and start his official duties. In the first three rounds of voting in parliament, no candidate was able to secure enough votes, leading to the election going into a fourth round. Tasulas, who had been elected as the speaker of the parliament three times before becoming a presidential candidate, held the record for the highest parliamentary support. After being nominated as a presidential candidate by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Tasulas had to resign from his position as the speaker of the parliament.
