Groundbreaking Quantum Experiment: Transmitting Encrypted Signals 12,900 Kilometers Away

Leading a team, Chinese scientists set a record by carrying out quantum communication over a distance of 12,900 meters. The experiment is considered groundbreaking for demonstrating the potential of secure quantum communication on a global scale. An international research team led by Chinese scientists broke a record in this field by conducting quantum communication via satellite between China and South Africa at a distance of 12,900 meters. According to Xinhua News Agency, researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China successfully distributed real-time quantum keys (QKD) between a ground station in China and a ground station in South Africa using the Jinan-1 technology test satellite in an experiment published in the journal Nature. By transmitting encrypted signals 12,900 kilometers away, the researchers achieved the longest secure quantum communication distance in the world. The experiment is considered groundbreaking for demonstrating the potential of secure quantum communication on a global scale. Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China had previously set a record in this field by carrying out quantum key distribution over a 833-kilometer fiber optic cable in 2022.
