The excluded European leaders are keenly observing in Riyadh today. The capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, is hosting a historic summit today.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov sat down at the table for the progress of the war in Ukraine.
Rubio, who visited Israel the previous day, discussed bilateral relations with his Russian counterpart in Saudi Arabia today, addressing the war in Ukraine.
According to the Russian TASS agency, the meeting lasted 4.5 hours.
The Kremlin stated that the meeting went well.
European leaders excluded from the talks gathered in Paris yesterday in response to this meeting and shared their views on a potential peace in the Russia-Ukraine War.
US President Donald Trump surprised his European allies last week by having a phone call with Putin without consulting NATO and European allies and announcing the initiation of a peace process.
In response, Trump’s Ukraine representative, Keith Kellogg, claimed that Ukraine and other European leaders had no place in peace talks.
US Secretary of State Rubio met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman yesterday.
The meeting discussed the issues in the Gaza Strip and the plans of the US. US President Donald Trump’s proposal to exile Palestinians from Gaza to Arab countries and “take over” Gaza received strong reactions from Arab countries.
Following Trump’s statement, Rubio began his Middle East visit for discussions.
US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce said, “The Secretary emphasized the importance of establishing an order contributing to regional security in Gaza.”
Bruce stated that Rubio and Salman expressed their commitment to continue the ceasefire signed between Israel and Hamas last month and discussed Syria, Lebanon, and the Red Sea.
Interfax news agency reported, based on a statement made today by Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian sovereign wealth fund, that Russia hoped to listen to Moscow’s position on Ukraine-related talks in Saudi Arabia by the US. Dmitriev, a former Goldman Sachs banker who had received education in the US, played a role in the initial contacts between Moscow and Washington during Trump’s first presidential term from 2016 to 2020.
