The President of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, stated after meeting with the Head of the Iran Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Islami, that the negotiation process between the USA and Iran is challenging. He emphasized that the Agency could serve as a bridge between Iran and the USA. Grossi had a meeting with Mohammad Islami during his visit to Iran. In his press statement following the meeting, Grossi mentioned that they had a productive and constructive discussion with Islami, as well as a deep and sincere conversation with the Foreign Minister, Arakci, the previous day. They evaluated how the Agency could contribute to the ongoing negotiations. Grossi expressed his readiness for the Agency to actively support and play a constructive role in the negotiations between Iran and the USA. He stated that they are currently in a critical phase of the negotiations and that reaching a positive outcome is possible. Grossi revealed that he is in constant communication with the USA side to facilitate the process and contribute to its acceleration. Pointing out the difficulties of the negotiation process between the USA and Iran, Grossi stressed that it will not be an easy path. He acknowledged that some parties might not want the process to succeed, but emphasized the importance of continuing efforts for peace. Grossi highlighted that understanding Iran’s stance and respecting the country’s expectations are crucial to ensuring the healthy progress of the negotiation process. He expressed that the Agency could potentially act as a bridge between Iran and the USA, providing the necessary support for a positive outcome of the talks. Grossi reiterated that one of the fundamental missions of the Agency is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. He emphasized the goal of ensuring that all countries, including Iran, can benefit limitlessly from this technology while ensuring that it is only used for peaceful purposes. The initial round of indirect nuclear-themed talks between the USA and Iran took place in Muscat, Oman, on April 12th, with the participation of the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Arakci, and the Special Representative for the Middle East of the USA President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff. The talks, mediated by the Omani Foreign Minister, Bedr bin Hamed el-Busaidi, were viewed positively and constructively by both sides.
