Impact of Frost on Agriculture: Will Prices Increase at the Market?

The unexpected and prolonged cold weather caused severe agricultural frost damage. Potatoes remained in the fields, while fruits, vegetables, and grains suffered significant losses. It is anticipated that the prices of products affected by agricultural frost will rise. Concerns about crop yields in fruits and vegetables are rising. In the Çukurova region, agricultural frost occurred from February 22nd to February 25th. The four-day frost negatively impacted agricultural production in the region; most early potatoes were damaged in the fields. Other potato varieties also experienced reduced yields, and harvest was delayed by a month. Mehmet Akın Doğan, President of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, stated, “We knew there would be frost, but according to the information we received from the Meteorology Department, we were expecting temperatures between -1 and -3, yet they dropped to -5 and -8. Some farmers burned rubber, straw, and stubble, but due to the extreme temperatures, we could not protect our crops.” Citrus trees dried out, lemon suffered significant damage, and there was a decrease in grapefruit, tangerine, and orange production. The situation is also concerning for citrus fruits and cereal products. Farmers, declaring themselves as victims, are requesting deferrals in their credit debts. Doğan mentioned, “We lost all early peaches; temporary peaches did not blossom, so the damage rate there is lower than that of the early ones. We lost early vegetables and fruit, but our wheat crops were severely affected, and farmers irrigated their wheat expecting very low yields.” It is expected that the prices of products affected by agricultural frost will increase in the upcoming weeks.
