Industrial Production Increased in the Euro Area

In the Euro area, industrial production rose by 0.8 percent in January compared to the previous month. The European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, released seasonally adjusted industrial production data for the EU and the Euro area for January. Accordingly, industrial production in the Euro area increased by 0.8 percent in January compared to December, while it remained stable compared to the same period last year. Market expectations were for a 0.5 percent monthly increase and a 0.9 percent annual decrease in industrial production in the Euro area. In the EU, industrial production increased by 0.3 percent on a monthly basis in January, but decreased by 0.2 percent on an annual basis. In January, among EU countries, the largest increases in industrial production on a monthly basis were in Lithuania at 4.6 percent, Portugal at 3.7 percent, and Austria at 3.3 percent. The biggest decreases were recorded in Malta at 12.9 percent, Denmark at 10.6 percent, and Slovakia at 7.3 percent. The highest annual increases in industrial production were in Ireland at 10.4 percent, Lithuania at 9.8 percent, and Croatia at 7.6 percent. The largest decreases were in Slovakia at 5.1 percent, Denmark at 4.4 percent, and Hungary at 4 percent.
