Inflation in the US Came Below Expectations

In the United States, annual inflation in March came in below expectations at 2.4 percent. Consumer prices, on a monthly basis, declined for the first time since May 2020.

The annual inflation, which declined for the second consecutive month, reached its lowest level since September. Expectations were that annual inflation would drop to 2.5 percent. Inflation also decreased by 0.1 percent on a monthly basis. Inflation on a monthly basis turned negative for the first time since May 2020. Energy prices fell by 3.3 percent, while there was a 3 percent increase in food prices. In February, inflation was reported at 2.8 percent.

US President Donald Trump’s tariffs had reinforced expectations that inflation would rise and an economic slowdown would occur.
