Investigation Initiated after Doctor Performs Cat CT Scan

In Italy, a doctor used hospital equipment to save his cat, sparking an investigation. The doctor successfully revived the cat, but now faces scrutiny.
The incident in the city of Aosta garnered widespread attention. Dr. Gianluca Fanelli, head of the radiology department at Umberto Parini Hospital, used medical equipment in the hospital to rescue his cat Athena, who had fallen from a six-story building. Following this, an investigation was launched against him. Dr. Fanelli explained that his cat was fighting for its life, stating, “I knew I could only save her with a quick intervention.” Fanelli first performed a CT scan on Athena and then conducted a surgical procedure in the angiography department. Thanks to this rapid intervention, Athena recovered.
However, local health authorities in Aosta have started an investigation against Dr. Fanelli. They argue that the doctor “used public resources without authorization” and may have “deprived patients of essential healthcare services.” Dr. Fanelli, on the other hand, clarifies that he used the equipment after office hours and once all emergency cases were attended to.
“WILL COVER THE COSTS IF NECESSARY”
Fanelli expressed, “Being a doctor is fulfilling a mission. Life is valuable not only for humans but for all living beings. If my cat had died, I could never forgive myself, especially since my children love her dearly.” He also mentioned that he would cover the costs of the procedures himself if needed.
Fanelli’s wife, Nicoletta Spelgatti, a senator from the right-wing League Party, supported her husband. Spelgatti stated, “My husband saved a life, that’s all.” Athena is one of the five cats that Fanelli rescued from the streets. This incident has sparked a new debate in Italy on the use of public resources and animal rights. While many on social media support Fanelli, some criticize the use of public property for personal purposes.
