Iranians Desiring to Tweet Like Everyone Else

In Iran, where access to foreign social media and messaging platforms such as Telegram, Facebook, X, and YouTube is restricted, the population is awaiting the lifting of this ban. Reports indicate that 80% of the people in the capital city of Tehran are demanding the removal of barriers placed on foreign social media applications. During a meeting of the Tehran State Planning and Development Council, Iranian Vice President Mohammed Jafar Kaimpenah provided information on a survey conducted to identify the satisfaction and concerns of Tehran residents. Kaimpenah mentioned that a survey involving 2,000 participants was conducted to identify the most significant issues across the province. Results indicated that 45% of Tehran residents were satisfied with the public transportation system, 33% with educational opportunities, 33% with access to clean water, and 30% with the traffic situation. Furthermore, it was revealed that 32% of Tehran’s population was dissatisfied with air pollution, while 18% expressed concerns about irregular migration. Kaimpenah mentioned that 80% of Tehran residents disapprove of the filtering of social networks. According to the survey, 54% of the population believes that the country’s problems stem from sanctions and external pressures, with a satisfaction rate of 74% towards President Pezeshkian. Social media platforms have been banned in Iran for a long time, including Telegram, Facebook, X, and YouTube. Following the protests triggered by the death of a young woman in police custody in September 2022, restrictions were imposed on popular social media and messaging networks such as WhatsApp and Instagram. Nevertheless, Iranian users can bypass these restrictions using password-cracking programs (VPNs). The government led by President Pezeshkian, who promised during the election campaign to lift most internet restrictions, removed the WhatsApp ban in December. Despite being banned in the country, the X social media platform is actively used by high-ranking officials in the state.
