Is the population of butterflies declining? Population decreased by 22% in the USA

Scientists in the USA have revealed that the butterfly population across the country decreased by 22% between 2000 and 2020. The researchers stated that the reason for this decline in butterfly population is habitat loss, agricultural pesticides, and climate change.
According to a report by Science Daily, data from 76,000 studies on butterflies were analyzed, totaling 12.6 million pieces of data. Scientists examined the population changes of 342 butterfly species using statistical models to determine the rates of decline over the years and the most affected species.
DECREASED BY 22%: The study found that the butterfly population across the USA decreased by 22% from 2000 to 2020. The research highlighted that the population of 107 different butterfly species in the USA declined by more than 50%, with some species noted to be extinct by 98%.
REASONS FOR THE DECLINE IN BUTTERFLY POPULATION: Scientists emphasized that the decline in butterfly population is linked to habitat loss, agricultural pesticides, and climate change. Highlighting the vital role of butterflies in ecosystems, scientists mentioned that with suitable conservation measures, butterfly populations could recover due to their rapid reproductive ability. The research findings were published in the journal “Science.”
