Israel Allegedly Planned Attack on Nasrallah’s Funeral: Intended to Result in Deaths of Some Participants

The Chief of the General Staff of Israel, Herzi Halevi, revealed that they considered launching an attack on the funeral of Hezbollah Secretary General Hasan Nasrallah in Beirut, Lebanon on February 23rd. Israeli Channel 14 television aired footage of a speech given by Halevi to military students. In his speech, Halevi indicated that they were considering carrying out an airstrike that would result in the deaths of some of those attending Nasrallah’s funeral. Halevi mentioned that he had a special discussion in his car on the day of the funeral, stating that it was about Nasrallah’s funeral and the decision they were contemplating. He asked the military students he was addressing to guess the contents of the discussion, and after receiving the response of attacking the funeral, he said, “You understand, who would support it?” Halevi argued that this situation demonstrated the seriousness of the decisions made by the Israeli army, reminding that Israeli warplanes flew over the skies of Beirut during Nasrallah’s funeral held at a stadium in Beirut on February 23rd, with a large attendance, for both Nasrallah and his then assumed successor, Hashim Safieddine. Hezbollah leader Nasrallah had been expected to be succeeded by Hashim Safieddine, who was killed in an Israeli attack on October 3rd, 2024, following an Israeli attack in Dahieh on September 27th, 2024.
