Israeli Press Reports: “PKK Disarmament Could Pose Threat to Israel”

The Israeli press reported that the disarmament of the terrorist organization PKK could pose a threat to Israeli interests in Syria. According to comments in the Israeli press, the call by PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan for the organization to disarm and dissolve itself could lead to significant changes in the region. This change, especially by increasing Turkey’s influence, carries the potential to harm Israel’s interests. An analysis published in Haaretz newspaper stated, “A ceasefire could alter the power dynamics in Syria and challenge Israel’s presence in the country.” The analysis reminded that the Syrian airspace was left open to Israel during the Ba’ath regime in coordination with Russia, and it argued, “If Turkey takes control instead of Moscow, the Syrian airspace could soon close to Israel.”
“It’ll Encourage the Withdrawal of US Troops from Syria”
The analysis suggested that the disarmament and dissolution of the PKK could “dramatically change power balances in Syria,” affect Turkey’s position, and encourage the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. Despite PKK/YPG, the most significant structure in the organization led by Ferhad Abdi Shahin under the name SDG in Syria, claiming that Ocalan’s call for disarmament is directed at the PKK and not them, it was emphasized that they could lose US support and be forced to comply with Syrian government directives. In this case, Turkey may withdraw from secure areas in northern Syria, and Israel may be in a difficult position as an “occupying force in southern Syria” internationally. It was also stated that this situation could influence Turkey’s stance.
“Intense Operations May Commence”
In a report by Kanal 14, it was assessed that the events would have significant impacts in Northern Iraq and Syria, and a new era was being entered. Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper’s report indicated that the developments would force the PKK/YPG using the name SDG in Syria to reach an agreement with the Syrian government, affecting Turkey’s stance. An evaluation in The Jerusalem Post emphasized that the attitude of the PKK/YPG using the name SDG would be crucial and that Turkey might begin intense operations to eliminate the organization if they do not heed the call. The assessment also mentioned that if the US administration changes its policy on Syria, the organization would have to reach an agreement with the Syrian government.
