Istanbul Chamber of Commerce President Avdagic’s Inflation Assessment

Istanbul Chamber of Commerce President Sekib Avdagic stated that they hope to achieve results quickly in the fight against inflation, which has been left behind for 20 months. Avdagic emphasized that the fight against inflation and price stability continue to be the main agenda in the Turkish economy. He reminded that annual CPI fell to 42% in January, and the Central Bank raised its year-end inflation forecast from 21% in the report announced in November to 24% in the February Inflation Report, citing changes in the CPI basket, updates to food price assumptions, and the increase in prices managed/directed in January as reasons. Avdagic underscored that both in the report and in the statements of Central Bank officials, attention was drawn to the contribution of fiscal policy to the fight against inflation. Avdagic also mentioned, “This revision is seen as a necessary update for transparency and data-based reasons on behalf of the Central Bank. However, it should be noted that upward updates are not desirable in terms of trust in the disinflation program.” Pointing out that the decrease in inflation to 42% on an annual basis as of January is an important result, Avdagic evaluated, “We hope to achieve results quickly in the fight against inflation, which has been left behind for 20 months.”
