Italian Prime Minister Meloni: “Division will weaken us”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, emphasized the importance of preventing the division of the West. Meloni stated, “If we divide, it will make us weaker.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made statements to the press before their one-on-one meeting in London. Starmer highlighted that they discussed common issues such as the economy, migration, defense, and security during their meeting in Rome last year. He stressed that they approach shared concerns with similar thinking. Meloni expressed that they are in a very critical period and stated, “It is crucial to speak with each other and coordinate during this time. I thank you for hosting the summit on Ukraine.” Emphasizing their determination to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine, Meloni stated, “I believe that preventing the division of the West is crucial. In this regard, the UK and Italy can play a unifying role. I have also proposed a summit among US and European leaders. If we divide, it will weaken us.” Meloni noted that the UK and Italy have harmonious bilateral relations, saying, “We both think outside the box and know that we need new tools and ideas to solve issues affecting our citizens.” The bilateral meeting took place in London as part of the summit on Ukraine, which will be attended by representatives from many European countries at the leader and ministerial levels today. The summit, which will also be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had a public disagreement with US President Donald Trump in Washington on February 28, is expected to intensify efforts for fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. Prime Minister Starmer announced that they are working on a peace plan with France and possibly 1-2 other countries regarding the priority issue of Ukraine following the disagreement at the White House, which will later be shared with the US.
