Joint Airstrikes by US and Somalia Target Al-Shabaab: 12 Dead

An announcement from Somalia stated that in the airstrikes conducted jointly with the US, 12 members of Al-Shabaab were killed, including high-ranking individuals.
In the East African country of Somalia, the government disclosed that they had carried out airstrikes against the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab in the country’s central regions in collaboration with the US. It was reported that 12 Al-Shabaab members were killed in the attacks, and that a vessel carrying weapons for the organization was also destroyed. The airstrikes came hours after Al-Shabaab had launched an attack on the town of Adan Yabal, approximately 245 kilometers north of the capital Mogadishu. The town was being used as a base for operations against Al-Shabaab. Al-Shabaab, which has been active since 2007, was noted to have gained strength in the past month. THE ATTACK WAS CARRIED OUT BY SOMALI FORCES AND AFRICOM In a statement made today by the Somali government, it was mentioned that senior members of Al-Shabaab were among those killed in the airstrike conducted last night by Somali forces and the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The Ministry of Information, in a statement made on social media platform X, provided information that in the targeted attack, the area used by Al-Shabaab members to gather and hide was struck, with no civilians losing their lives in the assault. The second attack carried out by Somalia and AFRICOM targeted an unidentified vessel and smaller boats supporting it. According to the ministry’s announcement, these sea vehicles were transporting weapons for Al-Shabaab in Somali territorial waters. It was disclosed that the sea vehicles were destroyed in this attack, with the individuals aboard them being killed. AL-SHABAAB HAD APPROACHED WITHIN 50 KILOMETERS OF MOGADISHU In another incident in the country’s southwest on Thursday, the Somali military announced that at least 35 Al-Shabaab members attempting to launch an attack on a military base had been killed.
Al-Shabaab had briefly taken control of villages located 50 kilometers from the capital Mogadishu last month. While raising concerns about potential attacks on the capital, before long, Somali forces had reclaimed those villages last month. Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab continues its advance in the country’s rural areas. The government is attempting to support the military with the help of police and guards against Al-Shabaab.
