Journalist acquitted for reporting Mahsa Amini’s death

The journalist Nilufer Hamidi, who was on trial for reporting on the hospital footage of Mahsa Amini, who died under police supervision in Iran in 2022, was acquitted on charges of “collaborating with an enemy country (the USA)” and forgiven for other crimes. According to Sharghdaily, known for its proximity to the reformist faction in Iran, Nilufer Hamidi’s lawyers made a statement. The Tehran Revolutionary Court’s decision to sentence journalist Hamidi to 7 years for “collaborating with the US,” 5 years for “engaging in activities aimed at committing crimes against national security,” and 1 year for “engaging in anti-regime propaganda” was overturned after an appeal to the Tehran Appeals Court. The final decision by the Tehran Appeals Court stated that Hamidi was acquitted of the charge of “collaborating with an enemy country (USA),” forgiven for other charges, and her case was closed. Nilufer Hamidi, who was detained for 17 months starting on September 22, 2022, was released on bail on January 14, 2024. As for the appeal regarding the case of journalist Elahe Muhammedi, who was on trial for reporting on Amini’s funeral ceremony, no decision has been announced yet. The protests following Mahsa Amini’s death: Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old who was taken into custody by the morality police in Tehran on September 13, 2022, and then hospitalized after falling ill, passed away on September 16. The protests began in her hometown of Sakkiz on September 17, 2022, and spread throughout the country, turning into anti-government demonstrations. During the months-long events, approximately 500 protesters were killed, and it was reported that over 100 police officers lost their lives.
