Journalists File Lawsuit Against the Shutdown of “Voice of America”

Employees of the Voice of America have filed a lawsuit against the institution being targeted by the Trump administration.

In the United States, employees of the Voice of America and some media organizations have made statements regarding the press institution being targeted by President Donald Trump’s administration.

Following the executive order signed by Trump, the budget and number of personnel at “Voice of America” (VOA) were decreased, leading the employees to file a lawsuit, deeming the decision as “unlawful”. The employees who reported that they filed the lawsuit due to the government’s decision being “unlawful” demanded a reversal of this decision. In the lawsuit file, it was stated that “an important neutral news source has disappeared in most parts of the world.” BUDGET AND PERSONNEL REDUCTION President Trump had decided to decrease the budget and number of personnel in some media institutions financed by the U.S. government, particularly VOA. The decision instructed that the functions of VOA, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Marti, which provides Spanish news flow to Cuba, hosting the U.S. Agency for Global Media, be reduced to a minimum level. Accordingly, it was mentioned that there would be budget cuts in the affiliated media organizations and a reduction in the number of personnel. Afterwards, it was stated that the journalists working at VOA were put on administrative leave.
