Labor crisis in Japan: Record high shortage of full-time staff

According to a survey, since the Covid-19 pandemic, Japan has reached the highest level of shortage of full-time staff. Particularly, the IT and construction sectors struggle to find employees, and the lack of workers is also increasing bankruptcies. A survey conducted in Japan revealed that the shortage of full-time staff has reached its peak since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Kyodo News Agency, credit research firm Teikoku Databank conducted a survey in January with the participation of about 11,000 companies from the private sector. The survey identified that 53.4% of companies need more full-time staff, marking the highest level since the Covid-19 pandemic. Among the sectors with the highest need for full-time workers, information services and construction stand out, while it was revealed that 30.6% of companies face a shortage of part-time employees. Approximately 68.1% of companies reporting staff shortages are planning to increase the salaries of full-time employees as of April. The survey found that the number of companies going bankrupt due to staff shortages reached its highest level in 2024.
