Following the decision made by the Ankara 1st Criminal Peace Judgeship, popular communication and social media platform Discord was blocked in Turkey. Discord, actively used by gamers, communities, and professional teams, has been inaccessible in Turkey since October 9th. So, what is the current situation regarding the Discord access restriction? Has Discord been unblocked, and when can it be expected to be unblocked? People are curious about the latest status of the access block imposed on Discord upon the request of the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office last October by the Ankara 1st Criminal Peace Judgeship. This decision was put into effect by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK). While cybersecurity experts offer different opinions on whether the access block will be permanent, users are eagerly waiting to know when Discord will be accessible again. Due to the lack of a new statement from the officials on the matter, the uncertainty about whether Discord will be accessible again in Turkey or how long the ban will last remains. Rumors claim that Discord has become accessible again in Turkey, but according to the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) website, the access restriction on Discord is still ongoing. No clear statement has been issued yet regarding this matter. Minister Uraloğlu, who previously made statements about social media platforms, mentioned that the European Union has taken measures to ensure the safety of users on major social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Minister Uraloğlu stated that these measures aim to prevent illegal content. Providing information on measures taken regarding social media in countries like America, the United Kingdom, and Australia, Uraloğlu continued by saying: “We are not truly in a censorious mindset on social media; but everyone really needs to know their limits. Are we going to stay silent on everything posted there? Should we refrain from intervening in a platform that has no discipline and insults all our national and spiritual values? But let me tell you, we have a much more liberal approach than social media platform providers.”
