Claiming that Musk’s recent actions contradicted himself, the OpenAI CEO sought permission from the court to use the offer. Musk had stated that he was willing to abandon the attempt to purchase OpenAI if its non-profit structure was maintained. PROFIT MOTIVE UNDER DISPUTE Elon Musk had sued OpenAI, alleging that the organization had deviated from its mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity without seeking profit, claiming that it violated the company’s founding contract. OpenAI had also released a series of emails and messages supporting Musk’s endorsement of the for-profit nature of the artificial intelligence venture in 2017.
