The increase in taxes was shouldered by wage earners. According to the Budget Monitoring Bulletin published by the Turkey Economic Policies Research Foundation (TEPAV), in 2024, employees saw a 5.5 percentage point increase in their share of income tax payments. When considering all tax items collected from income-generating activities in 2024, employees paid 65.4% of income tax. This share was at 59.9% in 2023. Looking only at income tax, the share of wage earners rose to 93.4%. Out of last year’s income tax total of 1 trillion 527 billion TL, 1 trillion 426 billion TL was paid by employees.
