Maxar Cuts Off Satellite Images to Ukraine Following Trump’s Decision

Satellite imaging company Maxar has confirmed that all satellite images shared with Ukraine have been blocked. This step was taken following U.S. President Trump’s decision to freeze aid to Kiev. In a statement by Maxar, it was confirmed that all satellite images shared with Ukraine have been blocked as part of President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze aid. The company stated that it has contracts with the U.S. government, as well as with allies and partner countries worldwide, to provide satellite imagery and other geospatial data. One of these contracts provides access to commercial satellite images collected by the U.S. government through the “Global Enhanced GEOINT Delivery Program (GEGD),” with Ukraine accounts suspended by the U.S. government in the GEGD. The statement emphasized that aside from this situation, there have been no changes in the contracts, stating, “There is no change in supporting other customers or their programs or contracts.” Experts have evaluated that without Maxar images, drone operators will not be able to target accurately enough and intelligence services will struggle to determine Russia’s capabilities. Mark Cancian, a senior defense and security consultant at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, stated that the indefinite halt of U.S. aid would cut Ukraine’s equipment purchases in half and weaken the military’s combat capabilities. Trump had issued the instruction to suspend U.S. assistance to Ukraine on March 3rd.
