Mayor resigns after tragedy in North Macedonia: “They were our children”

The nightclub fire tragedy in North Macedonia, which claimed the lives of 59 people, resulted in the resignation of Kočani Mayor Papazov. Papazov stated, “Those children were our children. I knew most of them.”
The nightclub fire, described as the biggest tragedy in recent history in North Macedonia, led to a resignation.
After the tragic incident in which 59 people lost their lives in Kočani, Mayor Ljupco Papazov resigned from his position. Papazov shared on his social media account: “In these most challenging times for our country and me, I want to announce my irrevocable resignation from the position of Kočani Mayor. This is a tremendous loss. There are no words to describe the pain we feel. Those children were our children. I knew most of them, I knew their families, and some were family friends.”
NATIONAL MOURNING DECLARED FOR 7 DAYS The nightclub in Kočani, located about 100 kilometers away from the capital of North Macedonia, Skopje, caught fire on March 16 at 03:00 local time due to pyrotechnic materials. In the fire, 59 people lost their lives, and 155 were injured, 22 of them severely. Last night, 9 of the injured were transferred to Istanbul and Ankara by ambulance planes sent by Turkey for treatment. The North Macedonian government announced that national mourning was declared in the country for 7 days following the incident.
